I have taken great care in selecting my dog and cat foods. The ultimate criteria is that I won’t carry any food (or treat) that isn’t good enough for my own dogs and cats.

As consumers we are not very well informed about what is in most pet foods. Reading ingredient labels doesn’t always help because of the confusion and misunderstanding of what our pets should be eating. So we see whole ground corn and believe that this is “natural” and have been told it’s “wholesome” when in fact this is just an inexpensive filler/protein, and one that our dogs have no real requirements for.

Since we often are not feeding a “canine appropriate” diet, scores of our dogs are plagued with allergies, itching, stomach upsets, gas, and other problems. I am not a veterinarian and I do not dispense veterinary advice. However, time and time again many of my customers have said a simple switch to a premium food can alleviate or diminish many of these symptoms.

For more information on pet health and nutrition, go to www.petfoodnutritionconsulting.com . Sarah Dixon is a pet food nutritionist and you can read her many articles on this subject. Sarah also holds seminars here at Barkville and is available for private consultations.

Another good source of information is the Whole Dog Journal. www.whole-dog-journal.com This is a monthly publication dedicated to canine health. This magazine relies solely on subscriptions ($20 per year) rather than on advertising money.

Here is a list of the foods I currently carry. Please take the time to visit these websites and find a food that you think will be appropriate for your dog. Anytime you have any questions, always feel free to drop in the store or send me an email. I’m always happy to help you and let you take samples home to try.

As of March 2009, I would like to introduce my newest food line, Bravo!.  Bravo is an excellent raw food and reasonably priced for those big dog owners who have always wanted to feed raw.  Thier website is www.bravoraw.com
