THE TRUTH ABOUT SHOW BREEDERS

There’s a lot of misunderstanding about the role show breeders play and the real purpose of dog shows. While I fully support adopting dogs from shelters, the decision to purchase a quality purebred dog is still a preference for some. And I think it is only fair to recognize the work these dedicated breeders do, and the services to the canine world that they perform.

I hear a lot of negative things about breeders. They are overpopulating, care only about money, mistreat their dogs, “throw away” puppies that aren’t perfect. There are going to be some bad apples in any kind of group, but based on my personal knowledge and the breeders that I know, nothing could be further from the truth. Let’s not clump all breeders into the same category - for the most part your show breeders are those with an absolute dedication to their breed.

So what is the big deal with dog shows? Isn’t it just a bunch of dog-snobs parading around their dogs?

A dog show is not a beauty pageant. Who in their right mind is going to give up weekend after weekend and spend thousands of dollars on training, travel, hotels, grooming, entry fees, etc. to have some stranger tell them they have a pretty dog?

People show their dogs to have their breeding stock evaluated by independent experts. Those with exceptional representations of their breeds are “rewarded” with championships, thereby confirming that they are breeding only quality, healthy dogs. This is the mechanism that AKC and its breeders and fanciers have in place to ensure the continuation of and the integrity of the various breeds.

Dogs who are placed in shows aren’t selected simply due to a cute-factor. While physical beauty is certainly a part of the standards set by the AKC, it is just a part of the criteria. Judges are well-versed in the qualities of the breeds they are judging. So many things are taken into consideration - structure, gait, coat, teeth, temperament - it is the whole package. Ever watch a dog show and see a judge run her hands over a dogs body? These experienced hands are feeling for a sound, well developed structure. Wonder why handlers are instructed to walk their dogs both to and from a judge? She is verifying gait, level top line, hips, and attitude, etc. A good judge can spot a bad topline, incorrect bite or unsound hips. It is important that these physical traits are considered, as many could be the cause of health problems in future generations. .

AKC Breed clubs have always been active advocates of spay/neuter, obedience training, CGC certifications and a host of other educational services. Responsible dog ownership is critical and always stressed.

What is often overlooked is the enormous role that AKC breeders play in canine wellness. Countless hours of research, DNA submissions, medical testing, discussion groups, etc. can be credited to many AKC Breeders involved in trying to pinpoint and eradicate breed-specific diseases. Providing healthy dogs is the number one objective for this type of breeder. A good one doesn’t think twice about spaying/neutering one of her dogs who might have passed down a genetic condition - regardless of how much money she might be able to get from its puppies. These are usually people with an undying dedication to their breeds, and will work tirelessly for their love of dogs.

So while you may want “just a pet” and feel you don’t need a “show dog”, if you are looking for a purebred that has conformation, temperament and health, a good reputable show breeder is the best place to go.
