DOG TRAINING PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Barkville is quite pleased to have our very own staff trainer, Diana Park.

Diana has been training and showing obedience dogs for over 10 years. Here’s how it all started…..

Socrates. Soc was a cute little Boston Terrier puppy that Diana got years ago. He now holds a place in AKC history, being the 4th Boston Terrier ever to achieve the highest of Obedience titles - the coveted UDX. (Utility Dog, Excellent)

Socrates soared quickly in his obedience achievements, earning title after title in quick succession. His work ethic coupled with his determination provided for a strong obedience dog with an absolute love of performing.

However, there was another side to Socrates. The reason Diana had to work with Soc is that he was intensely aggressive. Yes, this wonder in the obedience ring was quite the opposite outside of it. Soc didn’t like any little furry creatures, or big furry creatures for that matter.

So, twelve years ago Diana had to figure out what to do with her new little “attack dog”. This aggression had to be channeled elsewhere, had to be contained for his own welfare as well as that of her family.

Training. Training. Training. Behavior that started out to be headed for certain disaster ended up being diverted into something very rewarding and positive.

Socrates passed in 2008, and never really developed a “fondness” for other dogs. But due to a lifetime of training he never got himself into (serious) trouble. After his retirement from Obedience trials he lived out his life in luxury and comfort.

Our local shelters are full of dogs, some of which were abandoned due to temperament/behavior problems - those are the lucky ones. Others are euthanized. Aggressive dogs do not often make the best family members. Neither do dogs who misbehave in other ways, but none are hopeless. Nearly all dogs can be trained.

Whether or not you want to compete in obedience trials, or just want a well behaved dog, obedience training will enrich your life with your pet and cement your relationship with him or her. Not everyone who takes classes has a pet with severe problems. Most people just want a dog who can/will walk on a leash without pulling, or a dog who won’t jump up on people.

Diana uses positive reinforcement as her chief training method. She believes that while it is important for your dog to know you are the “leader of the pack”, this is instilled with a gentle hand. At no time will a dog under her guidance be physically hurt or shamed into compliance.

Training should be fun for both dog owner and pet! Every single dog deserves the opportunity to understand appropriate behavior and be a polite family member.
