WHY BARKVILLE WILL NOT SELL PETS PDF  | Print |  E-mail

I am often asked why I will not sell purebred puppies.

Please take a moment to read this:

We’ve come a long way since that popular novelty song “How Much is That Doggy In the Window” was a Patti Page hit in 1952. Back then, it was commonplace to buy our pets from pet stores unless we were planning to show dogs or cats. In these cases we selected a reputable show breeder from whom we’d purchase a purebred animal. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, breeding dogs has become a huge greed-driven business. A person who oversees the mating of two dogs may call him or herself a breeder but one who sells their pups to pet stores is not a responsible one. This type of breeder is what is known as a “commercial breeder,” many of whom operate “puppy mills.”

* Would a good breeder allow her pups to be brokered and sold by a 3rd party to anyone with a valid credit card?

* Would a good breeder sell a pup for a few hundred dollars so a pet store can turn around and sell it for thousands of dollars?

* Would a good breeder ship pups to retail stores at ages when they should still be with their mothers and well before they are old enough to determine if there are any health problems?

The answer to these questions is NO! Although many stores insist that they “hand pick” their pups, it is in fact, the BREEDER who should be hand-picking the new owners!

Good, reputable breeders breed for health. There is no way this can happen when “breeders” 3rd party their dogs - it is impossible for them to know and track their offspring!! How could they possibly know whether or not their breeding stock is producing genetic health defects??

Responsible AKC breeders do not broker their pups.

Pet store puppies come from commercial breeders. These dogs are often bred without regard to temperament, health or conformation. They are bred for profit. Period. Barkville will not support these types of breeders.
Many well meaning pet owners made uninformed decisions to purchase pets from retail stores and we hope your experience was successful. However, many more animal lovers have not been so lucky. Pet stores have become proficient at dodging the facts about the origins of the pets they sell, as well as the real breed makeup of some of their dogs. If you are ready to provide a loving home to a dog or cat, please visit your local shelter first! Barkville supports Parkville Animal Shelter and they have plenty of

dogs, puppies, cats and kittens hoping to be adopted.

Do not overlook the benefits of adopting an adult animal. Adult dogs can come to you already housebroken, socialized, out of the “chewing” stage and ready for a forever home!

Thank you.
